Today in science errors

Dec. 25th, 2009 | 12:46 am

Reading an interesting article on how our tendency to try to make things fit with previously established ideas is a problem for scientists. Mostly it was really good, but the third-to-last paragraph contained this gem:

Dicke ... was especially drawn to a then-strange theory called the big bang, which postulated that the cosmos had started with a primordial explosion. Such a blast would have been so massive, Dicke argued, that it would have littered the entire universe with cosmic shrapnel, the radioactive residue of genesis.

Sorry, but no: the cosmic microwave background radiation is not, like, the radioactive-stuff-giving-out-particles kind of radiation; it's the visible-light (and, obviously, other wavelengths) kind of radiation. The blast was so massive that the whole universe was hot, and hot things radiate light (everyone say hello to our friend the infrared camera), and that light is kind of a cosmic shrapnel, maybe, that residue of genesis that everyone was looking for. Radioactivity, not so much an important factor, is all I'm saying.

Did I mention that I got my Yuletide fic posted? *fistpump* Thanks to some fancy quick beta work from [info]femmequixotic, anyway. :D And now I am sitting in a tiiiiiiiiny airport in Iowa with free wireless! Even smaller than our usual tiny airport! Shiny.

I know there is more to acting than impressions, but seriously, why doesn't Enver Gjokaj get more jobs? He's done spot-on imitations of two of the other cast members of Dollhouse, and acted while he was doing it; they even trusted him enough to put him in a scene with the guy he was imitating! MOAR ENVER GJOKAJ. And Dichen Lachmann, and Fran Kranz. Plzkthx.

Me: Oh that reminds me of this song from--you know Allison Iraheta, from last season of American Idol?
RL friend: Yeah.
Me: her new album is, like, just amazing. Here, let me play the song for you...
RL friend: I didn't really like the winner. Adam? No, Kris. Anyway, I thought Danny Gokey should have won. He was the best singer.
Me: ....................................................

this is what happens when I don't have enough to do at work

Dec. 13th, 2009 | 11:09 pm

So the latest brouhaha in Idol fandom centers around a request on the kink meme for a fic where one member of the pairing is a Nazi and around a complaint against that prompt. As with all discussions of this nature, some of the people arguing against the complaint made statements such as "just scroll" or "don't like it? don't read it", and, well, who am I to refuse a chance to explain why I don't think those comments apply to this situation? (slight trigger warning for some of the examples) )

Just found out that Better Off Ted comes back on Tuesday. I'm conflicted right now because it's on ABC, but I love it too much--I think I have to watch. :) That link is to the Hulu page. For those of you who haven't watched it...go watch the first episode (and then all the rest), if you're in a place where you can access Hulu. The only way I know how to describe this show is: It's like they took crack fic and filmed it. <3

The episodes are only like twenty minutes long! *entices*

Dear universe,

Why is it "common knowledge" (i.e., suitable for jokes) that Tom Cruise and Ryan Seacrest are gay? I've never had a single suspicion about either of them. Granted, my gaydar for men is not wonderful, but still...I just don't get it. :/ (Also, even if they are, late-night comedians, OMG look how gay he is!!!eleventy-one! is never funny.)

Just noticing

Nov. 18th, 2009 | 05:46 pm

Adam Lambert's band: 3 guys, 1 girl (drums/bass/guitar, keyboards)
Allison Iraheta's band: 1 guy, 2 girls (guitar, drums/bass)
Kris Allen's band: 4 guys (guitar/guitar/bass/drums)

I mean--the instrumentalists section of the rock/pop world skews pretty male, as far as I can tell, so the breakdown isn't that surprising. And the sample size here is too small to be able to say anything about backup musicians for gay vs straight men vs women of any orientation, or to say anything about backup musicians for hard rock/pop/acoustic rock/whatever genre. But it is interesting, at least.
